Filmmaker Benjamin Hernandez, whose 1999 shot-on-video documentary The Detroit Rock Movie features early footage of many of the town's best-known bands-says, "We were kind of rushing to make that movie because we all felt that this whole garage-rock thing was about to become played out and this was going to fade. Amusingly enough, now people are starting to notice." Initially, the only outlets for the city's new rock'n'roll sound were Flying Bomb (run by Claydon and his wife, Patti)...

Confusion noise due to extragalactic sources is a fundamental astrophysical limitation for experiments aimed at accurately determining the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) down to arcmin angular scales and with a sensitivity $\Delta T/T \simeq 10^{-6}$. At frequencies $\lsim 200-300$ GHz, the most relevant extragalactic foreground hampering the detection of intrinsic CMB anisotropies is constituted by radio loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), including ``flat--spectrum''...

If AGN are powered by the accretion of matter onto massive black holes, how does the gas in the host galaxy lose the required angular momentum to approach the black hole? Gas easily transfers angular momentum to stars in strong bars, making them likely candidates. Although ground-based searches for bars in active galaxies using both optical and near infrared surface brightness have not found any excess of bars relative to quiescent galaxies, the searches have not been able to rule out...

We compare two opposite ways of performing a 3D reduction of the two-fermion Bethe-Salpeter equation beyond the instantaneous approximation and Salpeter's equation. The more usual method consists in performing an expansion around an instantaneous approximation of the product of the free propagators (propagator-approximated reduction). The second method starts with an instantaneous approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel (kernel-approximated reduction). In both reductions the final 3D...

We have studied 23 very metal-poor field turnoff stars, specifically chosen to enable a precise measurement of the dispersion in the lithium abundance of the Spite Li plateau. We concentrated on stars having a narrow range of effective temperature and very low metallicities ([Fe/H] < -2.5) to reduce the effects of systematic errors, and have made particular efforts to minimize random errors in equivalent width and effective temperature. A typical formal error for our abundances is 0.033 dex...

We present new spectra of dominant galaxies in X-ray selected clusters, which combine with our previously published spectra to form a sample of 256 dominant galaxies in 215 clusters; 177 of these are members of the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample. 27% of the central dominant galaxies have emission-line spectra, all but 5 with line intensity ratios typical of cooling flow nebulae. A further 6% show only [NII] with H-alpha in absorption. We find no evidence for an increase in the frequency of line...

We investigate the metal-insulator transition of the one-dimensional SU(N) Hubbard model for repulsive interaction. Using the bosonization approach a Mott transition in the charge sector at half-filling (k_F=\pi/Na_0) is conjectured for N > 2. Expressions for the charge and spin velocities as well as for the Luttinger liquid parameters and some correlation functions are given. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained with an improved zero-temperature quantum...

We describe a procedure to identify and remove a class of non-stationary and non-harmonic interference lines from gravitational wave interferometer data. These lines appear to be associated with the external electricity main supply, but their amplitudes are non-stationary and they do not appear at harmonics of the fundamental supply frequency. We find an empirical model able to represent coherently all the non-harmonic lines we have found in the power spectrum, in terms of an assumed reference...

We study gluon propagator in Landau gauge with lattice QCD, where we use an improved lattice action. The calculation of gluon propagator is performed on lattices with the lattice spacing from 0.40 fm to 0.24 fm and with the lattice volume from $(2.40 fm)^4$ to $(4.0 fm)^4$. We try to fit our results by two different ways, in the first one we interpret the calculated gluon propagators as a function of the continuum momentum, while in the second we interpret the propagators as a function of the...

The multiphoton ionization and photoelectron spectra of magnesium were studied at laser intensities of up to 6x10^{13} Wcm^{-2} using 150 fs laser pulses of a wavelength of 400 nm. The results indicated that a variety of different ionization mechanisms played a role in both types of spectra. A theoretical model describing the processes is presented and the routes to ionization are identified. The work demonstrates the significance of the two-electron nature of the atom in interpreting the...

In this paper we introduce a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations which in a particular case reduces to Volterra's system. We found in two simplest cases the complete sets of the integrals of motion using Nambu--Poisson reformulation of the Hamiltonian dynamics. In these cases we have solved the systems by quadratures.

We follow the evolution of disk galaxies within a cluster that forms hierarchically in a standard cold dark matter N-body simulation. At a redshift z=0.5 we select several dark matter halos that have quiet merger histories and are about to enter the newly forming cluster environment. The halos are replaced with equilibrium high resolution model spirals that are constructed to represent luminous examples of low surface brightness (LSB) and high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies. Whilst the...

High-resolution N-body simulations are used to investigate systematic trends in the mass profiles and total masses of clusters as derived from 3 simple estimators: (1) the weak gravitational lensing shear field under the assumption of an isothermal cluster potential, (2) the dynamical mass obtained from the measured velocity dispersion under the assumption of an isothermal cluster potential, and (3) the classical virial estimator. The clusters consist of order 2.5e+05 particles of mass $m_p...

Based on a recently established formalism (U. Ebert, J. Stat. Phys. 82, 183 (1996)) we analyze the diffusive motion of a long polymer in a quenched random medium. The medium is modeled by a frozen semidilute polymer system. In the framework of standard renormalization group (RG) theory we present a systematic perturbative approach to handle such a many chain system. In contrast to the work of Ebert we here deal with long range correlated disorder and find an attractive RG fixed point. Unlike in...

Copper is the bastard son of Eric LeGré, brother of King Richard and commander of the White Army who had a relationship with a half-dracoid dancer, Copper's mother. On a pig hunt with his father and brothers, who resent him because of his mixed blood, some rift hounds appear from another dimension and kill everyone but Copper himself. He is able to escape, but the monsters take his soul with them. It is Copper's task to prove himself in a world where everyone suspects him of having killed his...

We develop diagnostics to detect the presence and orientation of a bar in an edge-on disk, using its kinematical signature in the position-velocity diagram (PVD) of a spiral galaxy observed edge-on. Using a well-studied barred spiral galaxy mass model, we briefly review the orbital properties of two-dimensional non-axisymmetric disks and identify the main families of periodic orbits. We use those families as building blocks to model real galaxies and calculate the PVDs obtained for various...

We wish to report in this paper a study of the effective mass (m^*) in thin-oxide Si-metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors, using the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect and following the methodology developed by J.L. Smith and P.J. Stiles, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 29}, 102 (1972). We find that in the thin oxide limit, when the oxide thickness $d_{ox}$ is smaller than the average two-dimensional electron-electron separation r, m^* is still enhanced and the...

Several energy-momentum "tensors" of gravitational field are considered and compared in the lowest approximation. Each of them together with energy-momentum tensor of point-like particles satisfies the conservation laws when equation of motion of particles are the same as in general relativity. It is shown that in Newtonian approximation the considered tensors differ one from the other in the way their energy density is distributed between energy density of interection (nonzero only...

We investigate the time dependence of the frequency of X-ray brightness oscillations during thermonuclear bursts from several neutron star low mass X-ray binaries. We find that the oscillation frequencies in the cooling tails of X-ray bursts from 4U 1702-429 and 4U 1728-34 are well described by an exponential "chirp" model. With this model we demonstrate that the pulse trains in the cooling tails of many bursts are highly phase coherent, having oscillation quality factors as high as Q...
